Holland Hospital First in West Michigan to Receive Magnet Designation
December 17, 2007

Holland Hospital today was notified that it has been named a “Magnet Hospital” by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).  The designation makes Holland Hospital the only West Michigan hospital, and just the third hospital in the state of Michigan, to receive the prestigious national honor.

The Magnet Recognition Program® was developed by the American Nurses Credentialing Center to recognize health care organizations that provide nursing excellence.  By recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence, and innovations in professional nursing practice, the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of care that they can expect to receive.

“Your staff and your entire hospital team did a fabulous job pulling together all the exemplars that make your hospital a Magnet hospital,” said Brenda Kelly, Chair of the Magnet Recognition Commission, via a telephone conference call with more than 100 hospital leadership and staff.  “You and your staff should be congratulated for the hard work you’ve put toward bringing this all to a point where you can receive this award.”

“It’s a wonderful holiday present,” said Patti Van Dort, hospital Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nurse Officer.  “We’re proud to be among the Magnet organizations, and we look forward to our partnership with the ANCC as we continue to promote excellence in health care.  We’re humbled by this decision.”

“We’re not pursuing every award or designation.  We believe that Magnet will be one of the few awards that really set the standard,” stated hospital President and CEO, Dale Sowders.  “It’s been a journey and a long wait, but the very best things are well worth the wait and this is certainly one of them.  It is, I believe, the singularly highest individual designation we’ve received in our history.”

Holland Hospital began its journey toward Magnet designation in January, 2005.  The entire process can take up to two years, and is marked by the creation of a Magnet document which is submitted to the ANCC and the general public.  “The Magnet document is written confirmation of Holland Hospital’s commitment to excellence,” said Sue Shattuck, MS, RN, CS-BC, Magnet Designation Leader.  “Through the document, we were able to showcase the many accomplishments and excellence in patient care.”

More information about Holland Hospital’s designation as a Magnet Hospital can be found on the hospital’s Web site hollandhospital.org or at the ANCC Web address: http://nursecredentialing.org/magnet/
