HOLLAND, Mich., May 14, 2024 — This week, Holland Hospital joins communities across the nation in celebrating National Nurses and Hospital Weeks (May 6-18), which recognize the vital role hospitals play in providing exceptional care and fostering the health and well-being of the people they serve.
The care provided by Holland Hospital’s 2,260 employees vastly impacts the community by serving the health care needs of 250,000 people in the greater Holland area and across Ottawa and Allegan counties. Over the past year, Holland Hospital provided outpatient services to over 495,000 patients, performed over 145,000 radiology procedures, cared for 6,250 admitted patients (excluding newborns), delivered over 1,200 babies at its Boven Birth Center, and offered behavioral health outpatient visit care to 33,000 patients. In recognition of these vital services, each year, Holland Hospital honors the caregivers who make a difference by observing celebratory events and expressing gratitude to its staff to celebrate their achievements. This year’s theme—Tightly Woven Care—recognizes every individual as an essential stitch in creating the hospital’s one-of-a-kind culture and the exceptional care and service it provides patients.

The 2024 theme, Tightly Woven Care, features a handmade quilt on display in the hospital’s lobby. The quilt serves as a powerful symbol of the dedication and compassion woven throughout Holland Hospital. Each square, lovingly crafted by a different department or location, reflects the unique contributions of each team to the hospital's mission. Dawn Veltema, a local quilter from Zeeland and owner of Fun2Sew Creations, meticulously stitched these individual pieces together, bringing the quilt to life and uniting the hospital's efforts into a cohesive whole.
Holland Hospital’s commitment to community is evidenced as it, once again, was recently recognized as one of West Michigan’s Best and Brightest places to Work for 22 years in a row – the only healthcare organization to achieve this milestone. While all teams contribute to the overall success of Holland Hospital, the organization recognizes its nursing staff throughout National Nurses Week by shining a light on several remarkable caregivers who are making a difference in their community.
Lisa Gort, Holland Hospital school mental health care manager, was named the 2024 School Nurse of the Year by the Michigan Association of School Nurses. Gort serves students at Holland Public Schools through Holland Hospital’s School Nurse Program. She will be presented an award at the Michigan Association of School Nurses Annual Conference on May 17.
Holland Hospital also is pleased to have a family dedicated to nursing excellence within its ranks, the Overbeek Family. Led by Mother Dawn Overbeek, a registered nurse at Boven Birth Center, daughters Elizabeth Overbeek Buresh, RN, Surgical Services, Veronica Overbeek, RN, Spine & Orthopedics, and Melinda Overbeek Conklin, RN, Surgical Services, have followed in her footsteps, each becoming exceptional nurses committed to providing top-notch care.
