HOLLAND, Mich., Feb. 13, 2025 — Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States, with coronary heart disease being the most prevalent form (Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion). This February, during American Heart Month, Holland Hospital, a nationally recognized leader in cardiac care, is committed to providing comprehensive resources and expert guidance to help the lakeshore community prioritize heart health.
“Heart health is crucial for overall well-being, and American Heart Month serves as an important reminder to prioritize cardiovascular health,” said William Frauenheim, MD, cardiologist with Holland Hospital. “We encourage everyone to take advantage of this time to learn more about heart disease and adopt healthy habits that can make a significant difference.”
Dr. Frauenheim shared that it’s important to be aware of personal risk factors and take steps to protect your heart. He recommends the following heart health tips:
- Know Your Numbers: Understand your blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and body mass index (BMI), as these are key indicators of heart health. Talk to your primary care physician about getting screened.
- Eat a Heart-Healthy Diet: Focus on consuming plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein, while limiting saturated and trans fats, sodium, and added sugars.
- Stay Active: Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity aerobic exercise per week. Even small amounts of physical activity are beneficial.
- Maintain a Healthy Weight: Being overweight or obese increases the risk of heart disease. Talk to your doctor about healthy weight management strategies.
- Don't Smoke: Smoking is a major risk factor for heart disease. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your heart health.
- Manage Stress: Chronic stress can take a toll on your heart. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as exercise, relaxation techniques, or spending time with loved ones.
- Get Adequate Sleep: Sleep is essential for overall health, including heart health. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
- Regular Checkups: Schedule regular checkups with your doctor to discuss your heart health and screen for any potential issues.
- Call 911: In the event of a suspected heart attack or other cardiac emergency, call 911 immediately. Do not delay seeking professional medical help.
