HOLLAND, Mich., March 21, 2024 — Expanding choices for moms-to-be, Holland Hospital Boven Birth Center today announces the addition of Midwife Services to its birthing options along with an enhanced model of Ob/Gyn care.

Holland Hospital Midwife Services, comprised of certified nurse midwives (CNMs), will offer deliveries at Boven Birth Center on the hospital’s main campus and will provide personalized obstetric and routine gynecological care at the Holland Hospital Medical Building in Zeeland.  CNMs hold advanced degrees in nursing (MSN, DNP, PhD), with certification from the American Midwifery Certification Board.

In addition to midwifery services, and in collaboration with Ob/Gyn Associates of Holland, the new care model will include onsite OB hospitalists who will provide 24/7 in-hospital care to obstetric patients. The model also includes the addition of a specialized OB Emergency Department, providing patients with urgent or emergent obstetric complaints access to an OB Hospitalist. The OB Emergency Department is in a dedicated Boven Birth Center unit.

“We understand that every woman has unique needs and preferences when it comes to childbirth,” said Nicole Huisman, director of Holland Hospital’s Boven Birth Center. “By adding these services to our birthing options, we empower women to choose the birthing experience that suits them while ensuring the best care is available for moms and babies.”

The addition of midwives to Boven Birth Center allows Holland Hospital to offer a full complement of labor and delivery services. This includes on-site obstetricians, midwives, an OB Emergency Department, and the only Level II Special Care Nursery in the region. Parents-to-be can rest assured knowing they have access to the eight-bed Special Care Nursery that is staffed by dedicated pediatric hospitalist physicians, neonatal nurse practitioners and specialty-trained registered nurses.

“We’re excited to implement this enhanced care model that further elevates the safety and quality of care we provide and offers our community additional options for exceptional obstetric care,” said Huisman.

Boven Birth Center continues to be a lakeshore leader, providing best-in-class Ob/Gyn care to all women in our community. Boven Birth Center has received the highest level of recognition for maternal care from the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health since the program’s inception five years ago. The program includes ways to help recognize patient safety benchmarks and address bias and health equities.

Holland Hospital has been recognized as Top 5% in the Nation for Outstanding Patient Experience 16 years in a row from Healthgrades. It also ranks as one of only two hospitals in Michigan, and one of less than 80 in the country, to receive both the Outstanding Patient Experience Award and Patient Safety Excellence Award in 2024.
